Alan Stutts On General Industry Working Conditions

General Industry Working Conditions

Alan Stutts writes that restaurants and hotels come in all sizes. Small cafes may have fewer than five employees, while large chain restaurants can even several dozen at each location. A boarding house or bed and breakfast may be run entirely by an owner/manager, while a large resort hotel has hundreds of staff people, some of whom live on the grounds.  This is an industry where most people spend long hours on their feet and spend each day making complete strangers feel welcome and happy.  Regardless of size, all establishments are governed by local, state, and federal regulations that affect the minimum working conditions your work under. What makes the big difference in how much you like working someplace is what the owners and managers of the establishment do above and beyond the legal requirements. For example, in a large, chain restaurant you may have an employee break room and lockers for stowing personal belongings. But working for a small café owner who works side-by-side with you and takes a personal interest in your well-being can make up for having to take breaks in an alley or stash your handbag under the counter.

Alan Stutts says that food service and lodging establishments can be hectic work places. The lunch rush, the arrival of the tour bus, the unexpected arrival of the 50-person group wanting a late dinner, the power outage that shuts down the elevators and the kitchen – these are some of the regular and irregular events that can tax the skills and patience not just of a manager, but an entire staff. You can plan for the lunch rush, but a power outage takes you by surprise.

Typical Hours of work

Many establishments in the hospitality industry are open 24-hours day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Employees work in shifts, work weekends, and work holidays. Some establishments have rotating shifts, where you may work days one week, nights the next, and a split shift the following week. The days of the week you work can also not be change frequently. In a smaller establishment, there may enough staff to still in for illnesses or emergencies, so you may have to work extra days or extra shifts when these contingencies arise.  Resort and vacation businesses may be open year-round, but nearly empty during the off-season. They experience dramatic shifts in the size of the workforce and the hours of operations when seasons change. In such a seasonal establishment, you may even be laid-off for several weeks or months a year. If you are a resident manager, whether of a small motel or at a large resort, you may be on-call 24-hours a day and expected to fill-in on short-notice. Managers must be on-site whenever employees are working and customers are present. Early in their careers, food service and lodging managers often work the less desirable shifts, weekends, and holidays. It is not unusual for managers in restaurants to work 50-60 hours per week.
Earnings.

Trading The Forex for Profit

jan 8/09  295 words

Automated trading of currencies (the Forex Market) can be very profitable for the savey investor.  The Forex Market is traded around the world on various markets 24 hrs a day.  It is the single largest market on earth, trading some $3.2 trillion in value everyday.  The various currencies that are traded freely (allowed to float in value compared to the other countries) are in a constant state of flux.

Automated trading systems can be helpful to identify market opportuinties.  The simpler the system the easier it is to understand and to work with.  There are many worthless systems being promoted today.  Most of these systems only work in controled demonstrations.  Choose your automated system carefully.  An automated system should be at least 70% efficient to achieve positive results.

It is always wise to keep yurself informed of world currennt events, and the various domestic indicators in your target countries.  Things like GDP (gross domestic production), unemployment figures, orders for durable goods and so on.  These are the forces that drive the Forex Market.

The Forex Market like most markets can be a dangerous place for the untrained and unarmed investor.  While there is potential for huge profits in the Forex, losses are all too real.  Knowing how to protcect ones trading position is vital.  Often losses can be tracked back to excessive greed on the part of the trader.  Learn as much as you can about the Forex Market before you lay your money down.

A great deal of general information is available for free on the internet, however in depth training and access to many systems will cost you some money.  If you arn’t prepared to spend some money on your education and training you are looking in the wrong place to make your fortune.

Ferrets can be fun

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

If you a parent, then you will know from experience that your children will – at some time or another – pester you to get a pet.

When they are young, this might mean that they want a cuddly, fluffy type of pet such as a puppy, a kitten, a rabbit, or guinea pig. Or maybe they have their little hearts set on something simpler to keep – such as a goldfish, hamster, stick insect or caterpillar!

Most parents end up reaching some sort of compromise so that the chosen pet satisfies the child’s needs but does not mean that they have many years of looking after an expensive animal.

All of this changes though when your child becomes a teenager.

My 16-year-old grandson, Jason, is typical. He had kept guinea pigs when he was younger. He built hutches for them in our garden shed and they used to run around the garden squeaking wildly and keeping the lawn trimmed by eating the grass.

But as soon as my grandson entered those teenage years, he decided that he wanted something a little bit different and more exotic. And that is when he got Franky the ferret!

Now, until Franky arrived on the scene, I’d always viewed ferrets as being rather smelly creatures that were rather aggressive and certain to bite you. But Jason has shown me how wrong my views are.

He spent a lot of time reading up all he could about taking care of a ferret and how to ensure that Franky made a good pet. Ferrets are quite intelligent creatures and soon learn how to use a litter tray (like a cat) so that they can be kept indoors. They can also be taught not to bite and love playing with toys.

Jason bought the Ferret Lovers Guide from the Internet and this told him everything he needed to know to ensure that Franky has a happy, contented life.

Solar Energy Can Be Stored At High Temperatures

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Solar energy is the most democratic of renewable energy resources. It is available everywhere on the earth in quantities that vary only modestly. Solar energy systems can be divided into two major categories: photovoltaic and thermal. Photovoltaic cells produce electricity directly, while solar thermal systems produce heat for buildings, industrial processes or domestic hot water. Solar energy has existed for five billion years, since the sun was born. And humans have been using solar energy for thousands of years.

Solar energy can be stored at high temperatures using molten salts. Salts are an effective storage medium because they are low-cost, have a high specific heat capacity and can deliver heat at temperatures compatible with conventional power systems. Solar energy technologies offer a clean, renewable and domestic energy source. Solar Energy provides year round energy savings, protects against rising energy costs from oil and natural gas, and history is showing an increase in property values.

Let’s look at ways in which we can use the solar energy. We can also use solar energy to make electricity. The process is called photovoltaics. Our office building houses a 30 kW solar energy system. We go out of our way to recycle as much waste from our installations and operation as possible and we purchase from Green vendors whenever we are able.

Photovoltaic (PV) cells are devices that convert sunlight to electricity, bypassing thermodynamic cycles and mechanical generators. PV stands for photo (light) and voltaic (electricity), whereby sunlight photons free electrons from common silicon. Photovoltaic cells (or solar cells, as they are known colloquially) convert sunlight directly into electricity. But that is not the only way to use the sun to make electrical power.

Kidney Disease in Dogs – It’s Serious

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Kidney disease is a common and serious condition that can affect many dogs. It is probably one of the leading causes of death in older dogs. There are two forms in which the disease can manifest itself, acute or chronic. The acute form can happen so quickly and suddenly, while the chronic form begins slowly and progresses over time. Sadly for the owner, news of either form of disease is upsetting.

This disease causes a loss of approximately seventy percent of normal kidney function and it is these organs that act as the body’s filtration system. If these do not work properly, toxins and waste products slowly build up in the blood. This can lead to a variety of problems, and sadly, eventual death. This unfortunately is the harsh reality of canine kidney disease.

Kidney failure in dogs stops the ability of the body to function properly. Toxins begin to build up in their bodies and once this starts, a number of symptoms and warning signs will more than likely become apparent. These two chronic diseases show different symptoms, the acute form can appear more suddenly. Often, dogs suffering from this type of kidney disease will possibly have become dehydrated. For the owner to test for hydration, gently pull on the skin of your dog’s stomach. This should spring back. If it doesn’t, there may be a possibility that your dog is dehydrated.

You may have noticed your dog not wanting to pass urine or no urine production at all. This is also is a warning sign that your pet may be a victim of acute kidney disease. This disease can lead to your dog having extremely painful kidneys; or you may notice the animal moving with stiff legs or an arched back. These symptoms are signs for any dog owner to watch out for.

Chronic kidney disease shows different symptoms. They may well have a change of appetite with no desire to eat where normally they would gulp food. They may perhaps go off their food altogether. This will, over time, lead to weight loss. The first warning signs which highlight the start of the disease are increased thirst and water consumption. These are frequent exhibits of the condition. Sadly the dog may lose control of its bladder with frequent increased urination occurring. As time goes on urination will become painful, some cases dog health blood in urine will occur. Canine kidney disease can be deadly and serious, any signs of urine symptoms, vomiting, lethargic or depressed in your pet treat this as a warning sign and alert your vet straight away. If caught quickly it may be possible to gain control over the disease.

Kidney disease in dogs is serious and if the veterinarian suspects this he will normally follow four steps to determine if the dog has the disease or not. Firstly he will conduct a thorough physical examination. Secondly he will speak to the owner about their dog’s relevant history, regarding symptoms and behavior at home. After completing the first two steps he will conduct two steps, a blood test and urinary test. Both of these are necessary as to do one without the other will give a less certain diagnosis. Both of these tests will confirm whether your dog has the acute form or chronic kidney disease.

Tips On Ways To Increase Your Credit Score

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Applying for credit is the best thing to do if you do not have cash on hand to pay for it. But you can’t just get it so easily since the lender will first do a background check. There are many locations online that will allow you to perform absolutely free background checks. What shows up in a background check will be determined by your history. If all checks out then it will be approved. But if it’s low, you might have to pay it back with a higher rate of interest that could have been avoided if you knew how to increase your credit score.

Here is how to proceed.

Get a copy of your credit score and review all items to find out if there were any errors. If there are, notify the crediting agency where you got this from and send them the supporting documents to improve your claim. If the investigation reports an error on the part of the creditor, they will remove this from your record, and that will increase your credit score.

Although, if there were no errors and this is caused by excessive spending, then you have to find alternate methods to fix it.

Since cash is the primary cause of this issue, you should learn to spend cash only on the essentials. This means food. Surely you can do without a new pair of shoes, clothes or jewelry for the time being. You could be out of fashion for a short time but you can be trendy later on when things are better.

If it’s not cash, it’s most likely the credit card that got you in this trouble. If you have many, pay off the credit card with the highest interest rate first then work on the rest. The reasoning here is to be debt free. When that takes place, you can cancel some of them and keep a few to maintain your credit score. Make sure you only use up 25% or less of the maximum limit.

Tips on how to buy Internet Marketing Services

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Internet marketing is about utility. It’s not enough to build a pretty website; you must also build one that’s engaging and easy to use. Website Advertisingand geo marketing places an emphasis on marketing that appeals to a specific behaviour or interest, rather than reaching out to a broadly-defined demographic. Marketers have the luxury of targeting by activity and geolocation . Internet Marketing is vital to your online website. It can be the answer to getting some sales. Internet marketing advertising has never been better! Internet marketing is hard, technical, detailed work, but we offer everything you need to succeed. Website Advertising resource, online marketing resource, and promotion tools. Web promotion and traffic tools.

Search Engine rankings are just the result of modifying web pages. The difference between Winners and losers is very subtle. Search engines decide this based on extensive user studies so you’re really benefiting your visitor by having this done for your site. This is more complicated than most local designers or IT guys think and the information on the web is often outdated – even 1 year ago could be outdated, and there is so much speculation as to what actually matters. Search engines love social bookmarking sites so I am taking advantage on them. Search engines rank website’s based on a couple major factors: Unique content, keywords in the body, keyword density, website structure and link popularity (the number of quality incoming links to your website). Other important algorithm factors that determine your placement with search engine results is the architecture of the site, visibility of your content, underlying code and how natural your site appears to the engines.

Website submission services can be very helpful for promotion. If you have a website or online business, it is key that you get the online promotion you need to bring the visitors to your site. Website analytics combined with traffic report statistics define client’s increased ROI, ROAS & profitability. Web design is very easy now thanks to many companies that are now offering templates of web pages that are ready to use. Ready made banners, advertisements, music and animation can all be added to your web page too. Website marketing is as equally important as website design itself. But, what good is an innovative, well-designed website if people don’t even know it exists? Web sites that had higher PageRank would have an advantage and would in most cases rank higher than similar pages that were not as popular.

Is Tenerife The Next Marbella ?

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

It is true that the Spanish do not holiday in their own country in the same way that most Euopeans do within Spain and the Canary Islands. The Spanish enjoy staying with friends and relatives in their own country as a holiday and see no point in paying for hotel accommodation or private villa rental in their own country.

Even though the South East Coastal regions of Spain stay warm all year round, the Spanish don’t care for hanging out around the tourist resorts much like the Brits in general are not that eager to spend their main holidays hanging out along the East Coast of the UK.

However, as the economic downturn bites into the UK, Tenerife has noticed a large decrease in the number of Brits travelling to Tenerife for holidays in the last quarter of 2008 and all expectations are for this trend to stay the same for some time to come! Yet the number of Spanish holidaying in Tenerife is on the increase even though the Department of Tourist Investigation of the Tenerife Tourism Board announced that October was down by 6.9% on last year for total visitors to the Island. The ten months up to October had shown a 1.38% overall increase to 4,443,426 tourists in 2008.

The holiday firm behind the Nerja Apartments booking agency confirmed that travellers from the UK to Spain was still bouyant and that plans to open a new Tenerife Apartments agency would still be going ahead early 2009 whilst solidifying the Marbella Apartments position in the market place as they increase market share. They acknowledge the subtle change being experienced in customer mix and are developing multiple language options for their websites.

Making Money With a Free Online Paid Survey

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

In these times of economic uncertainty, market researchers are working overtime trying to measure and track public opinion for their large company clients. They use surveys for much of this, generating thousands of surveys per week. To get people to take the time to sit down and fill out the survey questionnaires, they pay them well for their time and effort. Thus the term “free paid online survey”

To get paid for surveys you must be invited to participate. To get invited you need to apply to survey makers, giving them your contact and demographic (age, gender, zip code, etc.) information and letting them know that you would be interested in receiving and taking a free online paid survey to fill out.

Surveys are directed at specific subgroups of the population, like, for example, “women over 40, college graduates, living west of the Rocky Mountains”. For this reason you will not qualify for all or even a high percentage of the surveys being made. To make money with a free online paid survey you want to be sure you get plenty of surveys to fill out. So you will need to sign up with one to two hundred good survey makers.

To make money with a free paid online survey then, you will need to get a good list of good survey makers. The best way do do this is to join a paid surveys membership site that maintains such lists for their members. There are a number of good sites that do this. Just click on any of the links in this posting and look for “Current Rankings” in the navigation menu on the left-hand side.

The most important thing, once you get your list, is to quickly sign up with as many of the survey makers on the list as possible; sign up with all of them if you can! Set up a separate free e-mail account for your paid survey business and respond quickly to all correspondence. And then, enjoy all the money you will make from free online paid surveys!

I picked up some good vacation ideas recently!

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Even though the economy is bad, we still need a little vacation now and then. I’ve been doing some research into saving money while still having a nice trip. I’ve been checking out some of the online travel websites. It seems that they all find very similar travel deals when searching for plane fares and hotels.

I can recommend a good website that will lead you to good deals on hotel reservations. Basically you want to use a travel website that has a reputation for providing a trouble-free vacation. Then I was thinking about where to go where it’s easy to find good prices on air travel or where I can drive my car. One obvious choice is Southern California. There are several airports and lots of activities for all seasons of the year.

A lot of vacation ideas are provided at the SoCal Vacation Guru site. It focuses mainly on Orange County and Los Angeles County, but will eventually expand to provide more information on San Diego County and the Inland Empire desert and mountain areas as well. But there’s great information about Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood, the beaches, shopping, dining and other activities. There are discussions about saving money and how to arrange for the best trip if you only have a limited amount of time.

If you are a roller coaster fan, the SoCal Vacation Guru compares the major southern california theme parks on their thrill rides (Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knott’s Berry Farm win in that category). In fact there are few places in the country where you can visit a half-dozen theme parks within a couple of hours drive from each other.

The SoCal theme parks include Disneyland (with Disney’s California Adventure), Knott’s, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Universal Studios Hollywood, SeaWorld and Legoland. Of course visiting all of those would not be particularly cheap, but you could fit a lot of vacation fun into a short period of time, so you might save on airfare and hotel reservations.

Winter and Spring are probably good times to schedule a vacation, as the crowds are often lighter then at many Southern California vacation destinations. Compared to other parts of the US, the winter and spring weather in California is very reasonable.

Also, it looks like the economy has a lot of hotels really wanting our business. We might get better deals now if fewer people are taking rooms and buying tickets to theme parks. Anyway, just some things to consider as we live with the recession.
